A piece of steel and cable fell from the San Francisco Bay Bridge onto the roadway Tuesday, causing an apparently minor two-car accident but backing up traffic for miles, the California Highway Patrol said. The Bay Bridge is one of the main arteries into and out of San Francisco.
No one was injured in the accident, which happened at 5:32 p.m. PT (8:32 p.m. ET), but the driver of one car "appeared to be shaken up," CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.
"It appears to be an area where temporary repair was done over Labor Day weekend," Van Eckhardt said. "It was unexpected to say the very least."

Extreme Makeover not only did the physical structures but also raised the outreach of the Salt and Light Ministry. The donations for the projects have been boosted. Salt and Light used to distribute food weekly to 240 families. After the publicity from Extreme Makeover, Salt and Light was able to get more food supplies and they can now distribute food to 330 families, which is an increment of 90 families. This number is still increasing from time to time.

It’s not often that I cook a large cut of meat; I find it quite intimidating. Likewise, it’s not often that I follow a recipe to the letter but I did both a couple weekends ago. This recipe had been sitting in the back of my mind for ages, ever since I watched it on slow roasted lamb shoulder and it looked foolproof. It turned out fabulously – the lamb falling off the bone at the slightest tug and the meat so soft it needed little chewing. The mint and caper sauce was tart and brilliant alongside; I expected the mint to be a bit too harsh but it had mellowed in the heat. Really, you’ve got to cook this as it’s almost effortless and the results are excellent. And don’t throw away the roasted garlic – beautifully gooey!

Police in the rural southern town of Yanagawa let Christopher Savoie go Thursday without indicting him on charges of child kidnapping.

Officials said the indictment was "on hold," but did not elaborate.

The prosecutor's office in nearby Fukuoka said Savoie was released after he promised not to take his children back to the United States "in this manner," implying he could not have any contact with the children.

Savoie, 38, a Tennessee native and naturalized Japanese citizen, allegedly grabbed his children -- 8-year-old Isaac and 6-year-old Rebecca -- as his estranged wife walked them to school on September 28 in Yanagawa.

With the children, Savoie headed for the nearest U.S. consulate, in the city of Fukuoka, to try to obtain passports for them. Screaming at guards to let him in the compound, Savoie was steps from the front gate but still standing on Japanese soil when he was arrested.

Consulate spokeswoman Tracy Taylor said her office had been notified that Savoie would be released Thursday afternoon.

Featuring just the Southern California-based schools, five of the nine Big West Conference men’s and women’s head coaches competed in a cook-off as part of Big West Media Day.
The participants were: Cal State Fullerton’s Bob Burton and Marcia Foster; Cal State Northridge’s Bobby Braswell and Staci Schulz; Long Beach State’s Dan Monson and Jody Wynn; UC Irvine’s Pat Douglass and Molly Goodenbour; and UC Riverside’s Jim Woolridge and John Margaritis.
Both coaches from each school teamed up to prepare two dishes in a 20-minute timeframe: sun-dried tomato penne and an original creation of their choice. Lucky Café in Tremont gets some star treatment on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," hosted by Guy Fieri. This evening's segment is tentatively themed "Barbecued, brined and baked," says Lucky's chef-owner, Heather Haviland.
"Beyond excited" is how she feels about the show's airing. Fieri visited Lucky's and several other local eateries early in July.
"We were having such a good time, the producer had to stop us a couple of times and remind us we were filming," she says. "I was so nervous at first, but after about 10 minutes I felt like I was just in the kitchen cooking with my best friend."

“There were a lot of people out,” said Coco Sutton, a park assistant. “It was gorgeous out. There was no wind. The campground is completely full.”
